Netflix Watch Party App

Concept Project — UX Designer, Manager
Project Overview
This was a conceptual project assigned to me and my team. Netflix wants to create a product that involves being able to watch a movie as a distributed group. Because of the pandemic, more people are seeking to engage and stay connected through different mediums.

Tools Used — Figma, Airtable, Miro, Slack

Team — Lux Siratana, Kira Snook, Sean Forsythe

Project Timeline — 7 days
My Contributions
My role as a UX Designer included Project Manager with a total team of 3. My role was focused on keeping us on track. We had outlined key concepts to focus on and tentative dates to stick by. As this was a collaborative effort, I was available and involved for all parts of the process.

The Solution — Our solution was to create a product we named Netflix Watch Party, a second screen mobile companion application. The main features include a group chat room, remote control that syncs with every participating device, and friend recommendations. This allows users to engage and stay connected.

Design Process

Research/Define

After conducting 10 interviews, synthesizing our data together as a team. We found various trends. With the biggest trends we chose to focus on these main points or opportunities as design features —

  • I like being able to chat with friends while watching media
  • I have streamed movies as a group with my friends and family
  • I sometimes find it difficult to pick something to watch

Proposed User Flow

The user flow shows a simple path to the solution for the user. Some action points include, if a user has found a title and if the friends they want to invite are on their friends list. We wanted to make this process as easy as possible, with the option to add friends to the group watch party and to share and recommend titles.

Ideation of Design Decisions

After making executive decisions on the features we wanted to focus on we have all the information to start our design process. Our solution was to create a product we named Netflix Watch Party, a second screen mobile companion application.

From early ideating with handwritten sketches, our team agreed on an intuitive and easy to use format for our application. Our inspiration comes heavily from the Netflix application that currently exists.
After this phase of the process, we prepare to do some testing with potential users.

Usability Testing

We prepared usability tests to distribute to 6 people. In the test we had them do two tasks. After the tasks were completed, users were able to express their frustrations or any insight on the application and what their experience was like.

Goal: To find if the app is usable and how difficult or easy the tasks are given. We record the findings and intend to incorporate them as revisions in the next design process.

Final Design Implementations

Home page or landing page once you open the app.
Your profile on the application that your friends can view.
Friends list with their online status, from here you can add them to join a watch party.
Friend's profile where you can view their recommended titles and what they have recently watched.
Robust chat room you can utilize to stay connected while watching together.

Results and Reflection

With our final design decisions, we had Abe in mind and selected the most viable features to help him succeed in his goals and knock out his frustrations. Next steps would involve more testing and reiterating the usability testing and potentially some A/B testing for a more intuitive product.

This was one of my first projects I got to work on with a team. It was definitely a challenge, however after much communication we were able to tackle on the problem and make executive decisions as a group considering the time constraint. After this project, I feel much more confident to take on more complexities and challenges.
